Výklad pana profesora:
Elfové se dávno ve Starých časech rozdělili ve dvě hlavní větve: Západní elfy (Eldar) a Východní elfy. Druhého původu byla většina obyvatel Temného hvozdu i Lórienu. Jejich jazyky se však v tomto příběhu neobjevují; všechna elfská jména i slova jsou zde v eldarské podobě.
Z eldarských jazyků se v této knize vyskytují dva: Vznešená elfština čili quenijština a Šedá elfština čili sindarština. Vznešená elfština byla dávným jazykem Eldamaru za Mořem, prvním, který byl písemně zaznamenán. Nebyla to již rodná řeč, ale stala se jakousi "elfí latinou", dosud užívanou při obřadech a pro vysoce učené mudrosloví a písně Vznešenými elfy, kteří se vrátili jako Vyhnanci ze Středozemě na konci Prvního věku.
Šedá elfština byla původně příbuzná s quenijštinou ; byl to totiž jazyk Eldar, kteří došli na pobřeží Středozemě, ale nepřepluli Moře a zůstali v přímořské zemi Beleriandu. Tam jim kraloval Thongol Šedopláště z Doriathu a v dlouhém příšeří se jejich jazyk měnil s měnivostí zemí smrtelníků a značně se odcizil řeči Eldar ze Zámoří.
Vyhnanci, sídlící mezi početnějšími Šedými elfy, přejali pro běžné užívání sindarštinu; proto byla jazykem všech elfů a jejich knížat, kteří se vyskytují v tomto příběhu. Všichni totiž byli eldarského původu, i když lid, kterému vládli, byl z nižších čeledí. Nejvznešenější ze všech byla paní Galadriel z královského domu Finarfinova, sestra Finroda Felagunda, krále Nargothrondu. V srdcích Všech vyhnanců byla touha po Moři nikdy neutuchajícím nepokojem; v srdcích Šedých elfů dřímala, dřímala, jakmile se však probudila, nemohlo ji nic.

Základní fonologie

Souhlásky jsou vesměs stejné jako v angličtině, s výjimkou sykavek: ž, š, č, dž (a českého ř) místo nich má Quenya zvuk podobný německému ich-Laut, psaný Tolkienem hy (např. v hyarmen - jih). (je také možné, že hy lze vyslovovat podobně jako h v anglickém human, huge. ) nejspíše odpovídá českému ch.
Quenya také postrádá th (neznělé jako v thing či znělé jako v the); neznělé th se objevovalo v raném období, ale bylo sloučeno se s krátce před vzpourou Noldor.
Také stojí za zmínku, že znělé souhlásky b, d, g se vyskytují pouze ve spřežkách mb, nd/ld/rd a ng (některé druhy Quenyi mají také lb místo lv).
Na začátku slov se spřežky nevyskytují, mimo qu (=cw), ty, ny a nw, pokud počítáme polo-samohlásky y, w jako souhlásky. Obvykle slova spřežky ani neuzavírají, na konci stojí buď jedna ze samostatných souhlásek t, s, n, l, r nebo samohláska (daleko častěji). Uprostřed dvou samohlásek se objevuje omezené množství souhláskových spřežek; ty které byly Tolkienem popsány jako "časté" a "favorizované", jsou napsány kurzívou: cc, ht, hty, lc, ld, ll, lm, lp, lqu, lt, lv, lw, ly, mb, mm, mn, mp, my, nc, nd, ng, ngw, nn, nqu, nt, nty, nw, ny, ps, pt, qu (pro cw), rc, rd, rm, rn, rqu, rr, rt, rty, rs, rw, ry, sc, squ, ss, st, sty, sw, ts, tt, tw, ty, x (pro ks). Několik dalších kombinací se může objevovat ve složeninách. Fonologie Quenyi je dost omezující, dodává jazyku jasně definovaný styl a chuť.
Je třeba si všimnout, že v Quenye je písmeno y vždy vyslovováno jako j a c vždy jako k (takže cirya - loď = kirya). Tolkien byl v tomto rozporuplný; v mnoha pramenech je uváděno písmeno k, ale v Pánu Prstenů se snaží psát Quenyu co nejpodobněji latině. V některých případech bylo k z pramenů regulováno na c.
